Welcome to You Ask Andy

Mark Bolke, age 7, of Salt Lake City, Utah, for his question:

How did the Saint Bernard dog get his name?

He is a very good dog, but of course he is not a true saint. He was named for Saint Bernard, who was a saintly man. The story began in Switzerland. There the peaks of the Alps are covered with snow and sometimes people get lost on the high slopes. Long ago, a monastery was built up there in a pass through the mountains. Travelers could stay there for the night. And every day the monks went out on the snowy slopes, searching for people who might be lost.

Many years ago, Saint Bernard lived there    and the grey stone monastery was named in his honor. And the high place in the mountains was named the Saint Bernard Pass. The monks trained big brave dogs to search for lost travelers. The dogs lived in the Saint Bernard Monastery    and naturally they were called Saint Bernard dogs.
