Bob Gaydos, age 10, of North Olmstead, Ohio, for his question:
How does a bullfrog expand his neck?
The old bass fiddler has every reason to be proud of that expandable neck of his. After all, his remote ancestors used it to voice the very first utterance ever made by any of earth's creatures. The deep throated sound he repeats and repeats sounds like jug¬o rum, jug o rum. Mrs. Bullfrog has little or nothing to say for herself. Mr. Bullfrog does his serenading with the help of an expandable bag of skin under his chin.
He takes a deep breath to fill his lungs, then pushes the air up to fill the expand¬able bag, in his throat. He shuts his mouth tight and seals his nostrils to keep the balloon filled. Then his throat muscles push the captive air back and forth over the vocal cords that lie between his mouth and his lungs. And out comes jug o rum, jug o rum ,which is the oldest tune in the world's history
