Robert Bishop, age 16, Morrilton, Ark., for his question:
HOW ARE HOLOGRAMS PRODUCED?
A hologram. is a pattern which can produce a three¬dimensional image of a scene. It is usually made on photographic film.
A holographic image is often so lifelike that it appears to be a real scene viewed through a window. The viewer can actually see around objects in the foreground by moving his head, just as he looks around items in a real thing.
You produce a hologram by illuminating the scene with light from a device called a laser. The holographic image is made by shining a similar beam of light on the hologram. The hologram changes this light to reconstruct the light patterns which came from the original scene. The diffraction pattern of the image is recorded on a photographic plate.
