Robin Fox, age 13, of Charlotte, Mich., for her question:
WHAT IS THE GROWTH ON A MOOSE'S NECK?
Largest member of the deer family is the moose. The largest ones live in Alaska and may grow to be almost eight feet high at the shoulders. An adult may weigh between 1,500 and 1,800 pounds.
The moose has high shoulders that look very much like a hump. The upper part of his muzzle hangs three or four inches over his chin. And he also has an unusual growth of skin which hangs underneath his throat. This growth is called the bell, and it has no function.
A bull moose will have heavy, flattened antlers with a spread of up to six feet. Each antler will have six to 12 points. He will shed his antlers each year and grow a new pair. The antlers are full grown in late August.
