Candy Baker, age 15, of Bald Knob, Ark., for her question:
WHAT DOES D DAY STAND FOR?
The most famous D Day of all was on June 6, 1944, when the Allies invaded Normandy, France, during World War II. Almost 3 million British, Canadian and American soldiers were involved in that massive effort.
D Day actually is the term used for a secret date on which a military operation is to start. Peacetime planning of military operations also uses hypothetical D Days. In planning the sequence of operations, such terms as D plus 3 are used, meaning three days after the initial attack.
The term D Day was used during World War II on a number of occasions to define the dates set for landings on enemy held coasts.
