Welcome to You Ask Andy

David Shields, age 14, of Salt Lake City, Utah, for his question

:WHERE DO QUAILS GO IN WINTER?

Quails include the partridges and pheasants in their family. They are found in most of the temperate and tropical areas of Oceania, northern North America, southern South America and northeastern Asia.

Although you might not see them in winter, they are still in the neighborhood. None of the New World quails is migratory and all of them tend to remain near home. Some of the quail that live in mountain areas, however, will move altitudinally with the changing of seasons. This means they will travel from the high country to the flatlands of the valley.

Quails are monogamous and all are ground nesters. Most species are highly prolific and will lay from 12 to 15 eggs per clutch. Some species raise three broods a year.
