Kreg Sheppard, age 7, of Hendersonville, So. Carolina, for his question:
How do they make tar?.
Actually they don't make tar. They find it. It was made by the earth and they find it in the .round. They don't make petroleum oil either. That also was made by the earth and hidden in the ;round. And the same recipe was used to make both tar and oil. It took a lone, lonc time and the job t7as started many millions of years a o. Experts are not certain about all the details. But they think that the rlain ingredient was zillions of mini sea dwellers, perhaps too shall to be seen.
They lived and died ages ago and their remains were trapped in t1ie rocks. In time., this oozy :aaterial was changed into petroleum. When the petroleum was near the surface, some of it turned into gases and evaporated into the air. This left great pits of the tacky material we call tar, or asphalt. It was made by the earth and people just take it from the tar pits.
