Isabel Ayer, age 10, of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, for her question:
Where are tears stored?
Actually yours eyes create new supplies of tears as you need them. A little of the teary liquid is used to wipe your eyes, every time you blink. When you cry, extra supplies are created and keep flowing until you feel like smiling again. The teary liquid is manufactured in two glands about as big as almonds. There is one in the outer corner of each eye, under the upper eyelid.
Usually, the tear glands make just enough liquid to keep your eyes moist and shiny bright. But when squeezed, they produce more liquid. If you blink very hard and fast for a minute or so, the tear glands make extra liquid. When you cry, your face puckers up and the muscles squeeze the tear glands. They get busy and produce enough of their salty liquid to fill your eyes, brim over and run down your Cheeks. When your face unpuckers, tear production goes back to normal.
