Dana Rrstic, age 9, of Visalia, California, for her question:
Do bald eagles migrate?
The Founding Fathers of America saw this great bird high in the sky and chose him to be their national emblem. Seen from afar, he seems to have a bald head and people called him the bald eagle. But actually his proud head is covered with snowy white feathers that shine up there in the sunshine. So nowadays it's more polite to call him the American eagle. No, the splendid bird does not migrate from a summer home to a winter home.
The American eagle and his mate stay together as long as they live. Their home may be a high tree or more likely a lofty ledge among high mountain peaks. There they spend all their summers and winters. Every day they spread their wide wings and fly far and wide over a large range. This is their personal property, their territory where they hunt for fish, rabbits and other meaty food.
