Allen Theiss, age 12, of Westfir, Ore., for his question:
HOW DOES A POMEGRANATE GROW?
Pulp from the pomegranate makes fine juice for jelly or for cool drinks. The fruit has a hard rind and is about the size of an orange. Deep red gold in color, the pomegranate is made up inside of layer after layer of tiny seeds surrounded in crimson pulp that has a most refreshing and tangy taste.
In the United States, pomegranates only grow in the warm climates of the Southern states. Although they are found on large bushlike plants in the wild, when grown commercially they are trained to grow in neatly trimmed, 15 foot trees.
The Hebrews used the pomegranate in Biblical times. Also, a picture of the fruit appeared on the pillars of Solomon’s Temple, and it was a favorite subject in classic mythology.
