James Cushing, age 17, of Van Meter, Iowa, for his question:
WHAT IS A KIBBUTZ?
A kibbutz is a collective community that you will find in Israel. The farmers living in the kibbutz share the property and combine their labor for the best interests of all the members.
A kibbutz village administration takes care of the needs of all the people. The adults eat together in central dining halls. Married couples have private sleeping quarters. All of the children in the community are brought up together
in a separate home with parents coming in to visit each evening for an hour or two before dinner.
Another cooperative community, called a moshav, has each family group living separately and working on separate small farms.
