Chuck Reich, age 13, of Winston Salem, N.C., for his question:
WHO WAS THE FIRST ARTIST?
The world's first artist was most likely a man or woman who lived in the Stone Age. Sitting in a cave, the artist took a sharp stone and scratched a picture on the wall.
Since earliest civilization, man has been a creative maker of things. He learned to make tools because he needed tools. And he most likely took up art because he wanted the rewards that aesthetic experiences bring.
Man has always had an interest in order. Very early he learned how to create things in patterns of contrast and balance. And part of this pattern was his development of a love for art and the arts. Art knows no bounds. It's a painting. It's a piano composition. It's a dance. It's a sculptured bowl or a statue. It's a stained glass window. Art is limitless.
