Stephanie Thompson, age 7, of Salt Lake City, Utah, for her question:
HOW MANY BABIES CAN A CHIPMUNK HAVE?
Chipmunks are rodents in the same family with squirrels and woodchucks. You'll find them living in tunnels in North America and Asia.
Most female chipmunks bear from two to eight babies two times each year. If they can avoid hawks and flesh eating animals that prey on them, chipmunks can live two or three years.
Nuts and seeds are the chipmunk's favorite food. He stores the food in his tunnels and eats by holding a piece of food in his small, slender front feet and nibbling at it with his sharp teeth.
Chipmunks sleep through much of the winter but may awaken on warm winter days to eat.
