Welcome to You Ask Andy

Tracy Janine Turner, age 12, of Cumming, Ga., for her question:

HOW MANY BONES ARE IN THE BODY?

There are 206 bones in the human body. Not included

in this count are the numerous tiny bones not part of the regular bone system which are embedded in the tendons over the bones of the knee, hand and foot, and in parts of the skull.

Bone forms the framework of the bodies of men and animals with backbones. Ligaments tie the bones together to form joints. Some bones are closely attached to each other in groups to form special structures, such as the skull.

When you put all of the bones and joints together, you have the skeleton. The skeleton and all of its parts are moved by muscles and tendons. Bones, ligaments, muscles and tendons are the tissues of the locomotor or musculoskeletal system of the body.
