Welcome to You Ask Andy

Louella Benson, age 10, of National City, California for her question:

Do the rings on the Olympic Flag, mean anything?

Yes indeed they do. On TV, we saw that splendid white flag flying above the Olympic Games. Many of us wondered whether its five interlocking rings were intended to convey a special meaning. If we saw them on color TV, perhaps we were able to see that each ring; is a different color. There is a red one and a yellow one, a green one, a blue one and a black one. The colors were chosen because there is at least one of them in the flag of every nation in the world.

Some people see another meaning in the circles. To them, each stands for one of the five main groups of people in the world. In any case, the splendid flag is meant to include all countries and its message is fairness for all. No country can claim one special ring as its own, because its color is sure to be shared by several other national flaps.
