Welcome to You Ask Andy

Lissa Wallace, age 10, of Charlotte, North Carolina, for her question:

What are aborigines?

Aborigines are the original people, the ones who lived in a country first. Later, others arrived from faraway lands and settled down to stay in the country that once belonged to the aborigines. Sometimes the newcomers arrived in great multitudes and pushed the aborigines aside. After a while, the country became the home of the settlers, their children and grandchildren. Sometimes, sad to say, they forgot all about the original aborigines who were there first.

The aborigines of America are the people we call Indians. Experts think that their ancestors came from Asia. They are the American aborigines because they arrived here first and lived here before multitudes of settlers came from Europe. The later Americans made great changes in their new country and, sad to say, often they pushed the original aborigines aside.
