Denise Edgar, age 10, of Youngstown, Ohio, for her question:
Why did they build the Eiffel Tower?
Now and then, some city decides to have a great exposition ¬and everybody from far and near is invited to come to the fair. Way back in 1889, the people of Paris, France, had such an exposition. And, naturally, they put on a grand show to attract everybody's attention. The showiest building was a handsome steel tower, 984 feet tall. It was designed by Alexandre Gustave Eiffel and nobody had ever seen such a building.
Naturally they named it the Eiffel Tower, in honor of the man who designed it. Seven thousand tons of iron and steel were used to build it and the total cost was a million dollars. When the great Paris Exposition of 1889 was over, it was, decided to let the splendid tower stand where it was. At one time, it was used as an army look out post. Nowadays the famous tower is used to send TV programs.
