Scott Karban, age 9, of Duluth, Minnesota, for his question:
Why do bulls dislike red?
They told us and told us never to wave a red flag at a bull. A burly bull is a bad tempered animal, always looking for an excuse to stab and stomp somebody. And the color red, we were told, makes him madder than anything else. So for a long, long time everybody believed that a bull dislikes anything that comes in any shade of red. Then, not so long ago, researchers started checking into this old story. And, wouldn't you know, they found that it is not true at all.
In fact, it just cannot be true, because the bull is colorblind. He sees everything in the world in blacks and whites and shades of grey no colors at all. He does not dislike red because he can't see it. But the bad tempered fellow gets mad enough to fight when he sees almost anything moving. He would be just as mad if you waved a blue flag or a white flag so long as he saw it move.
