Welcome to You Ask Andy

Will Smith, age 7, of St. Louis, Missouri, for his question:

What do worms eat?

Little Pinky, the earthworm, feeds on old, worn out plant food. If you have a green grassy lawn, there are sure to be earthworms living in burrows just under the ground. Some early morning, you can find the leftovers from an earthworm dinner. Look for a tired old fallen leaf that is pulled partly down into the soil. During the night, the old leaf was found by a worm. He pulled it down his burrow so that he could eat his dinner in safety.

A lot of dead plant material gets broken up and mixed with the crumbly soil. Little Pinky eats this mixture of dirt and scraps of his favorite food. He digests the snacks of decaying plants—and the dirt passes on out through his body. His diet is dead and decaying plants and there is plenty of his favorite food on the ground and in the ground
