Welcome to You Ask Andy

Ellen Jacobs, age 13, of Fort Smith, Ark.,for her question:

IS IT TRUE THAT THE STARS ARE OVERHEAD DURING THE DAY?

Yes, this is quite true. We cannot see them because their small twinkles are outdazzled by the daytime sun. During a solar eclipse, when the razzle dazzle sun is blotted out by the moon, the daytime stars become visible. However, they are not the stars that will appear that same night. For the day and night constellations change with the seasons. In summer, Orion and the other constellations of winter nights pass overhead during the daytime. In winter, the daytime stars are those that appear on summer nights.
