Welcome to You Ask Andy

Angela Wilson, age 8, of Enid, Okla., for her question:

CAN THE HORNED TOAD REALLY SQUIRT BLOOD FROM HIS EYE?

His proper name is the horned lizard  and certainly he can squirt blood from his eye. Experts tell us that he does this when something scares him or perhaps when he is sheddinghis old skin.

Most people agree that he does not often squirt blood, and it seems that some horned toads never do it at all. Nobody has any idea why he does this, though a squirt of blood might be just the thing to scare off a hungry enemy.
