Marian Diamond, age 11, of Berkeley, Calif., for her question:
DO GIRAFFES CURL UP TO SLEEP?
Many tall animals sleep standing on their feet, no doubt because getting up and down is a lot of trouble. Since the 19 foot giraffe is the tallest of them all, one might expect him to do the same. But he does not. He crouches down, with his long knobby legs neatly folded under his body.
Sometimes he dozes with his long neck held erect. But when really weary, he curls his neck around and lays it gently on his back.
