David Clark, age 11, of Wichita, Kan., for his question:
WHERE DID THE ORANGE ORIGINATE?
Ages ago there were two wild oranges, a sweet and a sour. Both were cultivated so long ago that their origins are somewhat mysterious. Most experts suspect that the bitter orange originated in India and about 3,000 years ago it was taken to the Mediterranean regions. The sweet orange seems to have originated in China and reached the Mediterranean region several centuries later. In the 1500s, Spanish and Portuguese travelers brought both types to the New World.
