Mike Moy, age 10, of Milwaukee, Wis., for his question:
HOW FAST DO BIRDS FLY?
There are more than 9,000 different birds in the world, and each species has his own way of doing things. They sing different songs, wear different colors and bring up their families in different ways. Some are hoppers; some can stride along, and some stand for hours on one leg. Each type of bird also has his own way of flying and his flying speed. Certain hawks and swifts can swoop through the air at about 100 miles per hour.
This is the speed record for the bird world. The golden eagle can fly at 70 miles and many wild ducks can fly at75 miles per hour.Even a wild turkey can do 60 miles per hour. wls and gulls often reach 40 miles an hour. But 20 miles an hour is top speed for the chunky pelican.
