Danny Friedman, age 9, of Willowdale, Ont., Canada, for his question:
HOW FAST DOES THE EARTH REVOLVE?
Some people stay at home and complain that they never go anywhere. This is downright impossible. because all of us travel along with the world. And our dizzy globe swings around in several different directions at the same time. Once every year it revolves in a vast orbit around the sun.
The earth's orbit around the sun is a round path, almost 600 million miles long. It has to travel very fast to get all the way around in one year. In December, when the orbit path is slightly closer to the sun, it revolves a little faster. In July we are slightly farther from the sun, and the earth revolves a little slower than usual. Its average speed around the sun is 66,600 miles per hour—which is faster than 1,000 miles a minute. Everybody, even the stay at homes, travels at this fantastic speed with the orbiting earth.
