Robert Lentz, age 10, of Williamsport, Pa., for his question:
WHO WROTE THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE?
Columbus discovered the New World in 1492 and in 1892 Americans celebrated the 400th anniversary. President Benjamin Harrison wanted to give the children a chance to take part. In Boston the children recited the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag for the first time. The noble words were written by Francis Bellamy, an editor of a magazine called The Youth's Companion.
The patriotic pledge we proudly recite today is somewhat different from the original. In 1923 and 1924 slight changes were made at the Flag Conferences of the American Legion. The key words 'under God' were added by Congress in 1954.
