Steve Legat, age 11, of Spokane, Wash., for his question:
WHICH ANIMAL HAS THE BIGGEST BRAIN?
One would expect that the biggest animals have the biggest brains. In most cases, this is true, but it does not tell the whole story. For example, the average elephant has an 11 pound brain, which makes him the proud owner of the biggest brain in the animal world. True, he is the biggest land animal, but the seagoing whale is much bigger. And the brain of a giant blue whale weighs 4.5 pounds. These figures should be compared with an animal's overall weight. For example, a man's three pound brain is 2.5$ of his total body weight. The champion sized elephant brain is merely 0.20% of his total weight and the whale"s brain is merely 0.0025% of his total weight. A smart little sparrow's brain is just 1.3 grams which is 4.2$ of his total weight. A sparrow has more brain for his size even than a man.
