Farah Naaz Habib, age 10, of Tsawwassen Delta, B.C., Canada, for her question:
EXACTLY WHAT IS ESP?
We find our way through the world guided by our senses of sight, smell, taste, hearing and touch. A number of scientists and other people believe, however, there is another source of awareness, of communication beyond the use of our ordinary senses. This source is called extrasensory perception or, more simply, ESP. The study of extrasensory perception is part of the field of psychology called parapsychology.
ESP happenings generally concern the ability to send or receive thoughts directly from one person's mind to another, or having the ability to predict future events correctly. Some even say that people who possess ESP can control physical objects by the use of their mind. Many scientists are not sure what to think about ESP. Those who believe in it can cite much supportive evidence. Other scientists, however, do not consider ESP tests to be truly scientific. Perhaps it might be best to think of ESP as something that might be true ¬but has not yet been proven.
