Debbie Haddad, age 11, of Peoria, I11. for her question:
HOW MANY BABIES CAN A MOTHER RABBIT HAVE?
A rabbit is a furry animal with long ears and a short, fluffy tail. Unlike other four legged animals, rabbits do not walk or run. They move by hopping on hind legs which are much longer and stronger than their front legs.
A female cottontail rabbit will carry her young inside her body for 26 to 30 days before they are born. She will usually have four or five babies, which are called kits or kittens. Sometimes she can have as few as two kits and sometimes as many as nine.
When they are first born, kits cannot see or hear and they have no fur. The mother keeps them in a nest she had dug in the ground. She doesn't stay in the nest with them all of the time, but always remains nearby. The kits leave the nest when they're about two weeks old.
