Welcome to You Ask Andy

Jud Turner, age 12, of Eugene, Ore., for his question:

HOW DID SCOTLAND YARD RECEIVE ITS NAME?

Headquarters of the London Metropolitan Police is located in a place called Scotland Yard. The name is often used to mean a special department of the force called the Criminal Investigation Department, or C.I.D.

The C.I.D. in London, or Scotland Yard, is one of the most famous police organizations in the world. Detective story writers have made its men the heroes of many books.

Scotland Yard received its name from the building that housed the London police until 1890. It was an ancient structure where visiting Scottish kings and ambassadors stayed between 900 and the 1100s. In 1890 the Metropolitan Police moved into offices on the Thames Embankment. The new offices were named New Scotland Yard. In 1967, New Scotland Yard moved to the Westminster section of London.
