Jamie Munro, age 8, of Lancaster, Pa., for his question:
WAS THERE EVER A REAL UNICORN?
A strange animal called the unicorn was described in ancient Roman and Greek myths. Said to look very much like a horse, the animal had coming out of his forehead a single horn that was straight with a spiral twist.
In the myths, the unicorn's horn had a red tip, was white at the base and black in the middle. The animal's body was usually white, his head was red and his eyes were always blue. His hind legs looked very much like those of an antelope while his tail was like a lion's.
Artists during the middle ages often placed a unicorn beside the figures of saints, Christ and the Virgin Mary. The unicorn was said to be a sign of purity.
