Jodi Jones, age 9, of Englewood, Fla., for her question:
WHERE DOES THE POMEGRANATE GROW?
The pomegranate is a most interesting fruit that only grows in the warm climates of the world. It can be found wild in western Asia and northwestern India and is grown commercially in the United States only in the southern part of the country since it cannot stand low temperatures. The plant is bushlike when wild but grows to be a 20 ft. tree when under cultivation. Scarlet flowers turn into red fruit that has a hard rind and looks a bit like an orange.
Inside,a pomegranate you'll find layer after layer of seeds enclosed in a crimson, pulpy material. The pulp has a refreshing, tart flavor and is generally used for making juice.
The pomegranate is an ancient fruit. It has been popular since Biblical times and is even mentioned in classic mythology.
