Welcome to You Ask Andy

Scott Downing, age 8, of Westville, Okla., for his question:

WHY DO STRAWBERRIES GIVE ME A RASH?

If strawberries give you a rash, you're a member of a large percentage of the population who suffer from allergies. Certain substances  strawberries with lots of folks  cause a disrupting body reaction.

While some people suffer allergic reactions to various types of fruit, the chief causes of allergic reactions usually come from such food items as chocolate, cow's milk, eggs, wheat and shellfish.

Usually the bad reaction from some food like strawberries is a short term thing. There will be a rash on the skin that will go away after a few hours. While some people have to give up the food items that cause trouble, some just put up with the rash and temporary discomfort to enjoy the bounty of the summer season.
