Kenneth Wilson, age 11, of Kings Mountain, N.C., for his question:
DO FISH BREATHE?
Remember that not all animals that live in water are fish. Frogs, newts and tadpoles spend only part of their lives in water and are called amphibians. Seals and whales are warm¬blooded mammals. Jellyfish and starfish are not true fish, nor are sharks or lampreys.
But all creatures that spend time in the water, including all fish, do indeed breathe. Fish the general name given to all vertebrates that live in water breathe through gills.
