Welcome to You Ask Andy

Donna Schultz, age 11, of Milford, Conn., for her question

WHAT CAUSES A CHARLEY HORSE?

A charley horse is a sprain of a muscle. It can be caused during sporting events when a leg muscle in the calf is torn.

Leg cramps that may occur during the night, and are often very painful, are also calld charley horses. They may be caused by a number of different muscle reactions.

Treatment for a charley horse is a gentle massage above and below the sore area. Ice wrapped in a towel can also help to eliminate swelling and reduce pain. If the pain continues, a doctor should be consulted.
