Pat Kimpler, age 13, of Libertyvilley Ill., for his question:
WHAT ARE DOW JONES AVERAGES?
You'll find the Dow Jones averages listed daily in the financial section of your newspaper. They tell those interested in the workings of the stock market what a cross section of 30 blue chip industrial stocks listed on the New York Stock E change did the previous day in the way of sales. Study of the averages can quickly tell those interested how the market as a whole reacted and this information serves as a bellwether for the future.
A stock is a share in a business, and a blue chip stock is one from a company that stands high in the Public's confidence because of its steady record of earnings.
