Welcome to You Ask Andy

Edwin and Earl Forbes, 9 year old twins from Huntsville, Ala., for their question:

WHEN DID THE GREEK FISHERMEN SETTLE IN TARPON SPRINGS?

On the western coast of Florida on the Gulf of Mexico is located the town of Tarpon Springs. The town with a population just over 7,000 was founded in 1876 and is one of the world's largest sponge markets.

Tarpon Springs' sponge industry started in 1905 when Greek fishermen arrived in the area. It wasn't long until a fleet of more than 100 deep sea boats were in operation by the fishermen of Greek descent.

In the 1950s, disease and overfishing had all but depleted the supply of sponges. But the situation improved in the 1960s and fishing started again.

The town is named after the 200 pound, eight foot game fish found in nearby waters.
