Welcome to You Ask Andy

Scotty Diddams, age 9, of Gallup, N.M., for his question:

WHAT DOES YOUR APPENDIX DO FOR YOU?

The appendix is a narrow tube which is attached to your large intestine. The tube is closed at one end. It is located in the lower right part of your abdomen.

In man, the appendix probably has no function. Some scientists believe it lost its function through evolution.

In addition to being found in man, an appendix is also part of the ape's intestines. It is also found in rodents where it actually functions as part of the digestive system.

If your appendix becomes inflamed, you'll have what is called appendicitis. Sometimes the infected appendix will burst and surgery is necessary. In mild cases of appendicitis, surgery isn't necessary since with a doctor's help the inflammation often subsides quickly.
