Trip Farrar, age 8, of Gastonia, N.C., for his question:
WHEN DOES A BABY HORSE LEARN to WALK?
A mother horse is called a mare and her child is called a foal. often within minutes and certainly within an hour, a newborn foal is on his feet. At first he is a little bit wobbly and he is all gangly. But within an hour he is able to canter around his mother and within a few days is strong and healthy enough to romp with his friends.
If the foal is a male, he's called a colt a name that applies until he is 4 years old. If it is a female horse, the name filly applies.
Father of the foal is called a stallion. It takes 11 months after the stallion has mated with the mare before the new member of the younger generation is born.
