Saint August, located on the northeastern coast of Florida, is the oldest city in the United States. It was named by a Spanish admiral, Pedro Menendez de Aviles, who sighted the location on Saint Augustine's Day, Aug. 28, 1565.
The city has a colorful history. It served as early day headquarters of missionary work among the Indians. In 1763 it passed into the possession of the British, returning to Spanish possession in 1783. U.S. sovereignty was established in 1821.
Saint Augustine is a beautiful city that is stepped in a colorful history. One of its chief industries today is entertaining tourists.
