H. Kevin. Dudley, age 15, of Charlottesville, Va., for his question:
WHO SELECTED THE MOUNT RUSHMORE PRESIDENTS?
In the Black Hills of southwestern South Dakota on the face of stonv Mount Rushmore are carved the faces of four U.S. Presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. Selection of the four for this spectacular national memorial was made by an act of Congress on 3, 1925.
Sculptor Gutzon Borglum was selected to do the work and his project started in 1927. The stone faces measure 60 feet from chin to the top of the head and can be seen 18 miles away.
The sculpture was nearly finished in 1941 when Borglum died, and the project was completed by his son, Lincoln Borglum.
