WHO WAS QUASIMODO?
Salvatore Quasimodo was one of Italy's most famous poets.He won the Nobel prize for literature in 1959.
Born in 1901, Quasimodo belonged to a group of poets who wrote in a personal style. He wrote of the events of his time and told of the grief and destruction that was suffered by many during World War II.
The poet opposed Mussolini and his anti Fascist activities led to his imprisonment for a time. His writing is known for a mature style that is marked by clarity and sensitivity. His subject matter is compelling and original.
Quasimodo died in 1968.
