Janet Shaw, age 15, of Erie, Pa., for her question:
WHERE IS LAKE TANA?
Lake Tana is the largest lake in Ethiopia. It is located on the central plateau of Amhara in the Ethiopian highlands near Gonar. The outlet of Lake Tana, at its southeastern corner, forms a bay about 11 miles long and eight miles wide. From this bay flows the Abbai River, or the Blue Nile.
About 53 miles long and 41 miles wide, Lake Tana reaches a depth of about 50 feet. About 50 streams, the largest of which is the Little Abbai or Upper Nile, flow into the lake. Lake Tana is located about 6,000 feet above sea level.
Several small islands are located in the lake.
A number of towns are located on the lake's shores. Chief of these towns are Bahir Dar in the south and Gorgora in the north. Gorgora was once the capital of the 16th and 17th century Abyssinian kings.
Lake Tana holds many fish that are good to eat.
