Welcome to You Ask Andy

Renee Parks, age 15, of New Bedford, Mass., for her question:

WHERE IS THE GRAVEYARD OF THE ATLANTIC?

The Sable Island, is a low lying crescent shape island that is located in the Atlantic ocean east of Nova Scotia, Canada, about 180 mites east of Halifax. Because the island has been a major hazard to ship navigation, and more than 200 shipwrecks have occurred there since 1583, it is called the graveyard of the Atlantic Ocean.

The exposed part of a long sand shoal, the treeless Sable Island is about 20 miles long and about one mile wide.

At the present time ships are alerted to the dangers of the island by two lighthouses that were built in 1873. There is also a radio warning system to tell ship captains of the trouble they may meet.

Sable Island was briefly settled from 1598 until 1603 by a small French colony.

At the present time Sable Island is inhabited by only a few families and some wild horses.
