DID JOHN WAYNE WIN AN OSCAR?

John Wayne was the processional name of an American motion picture actor who was beloved as the archetype of rugged, honest American manhood. He won an Academy Award or Oscar in 1965 for his portrayal of Rooster Cogburn in the movie "True Grit."

Wayne was born Marion Michael Morrison in Winterset, Iowa in 1907. He was a star football player at the University of Southern California when he began playing bit parts in motion pictures.

In 1929 Wayne hads his first leading role in a movie called "The Big Trail." Then through the years, he was features 1n many fine films including "Stagecoach" in 1939, "Fort Apache" in 1948 and "The Quiet Man" in 1952. Those three films were directed by John Ford.

"The Alamo" in 1960 and "The Green Berets" in 1968, both of which Wayne produced, directed and starred in, clearly conveyed his conservative philosophy. Wayne died in 1979.
