Nicky Morris, age 11, of Huntsville, Ala., for her question:
WHAT IS PODIATRY?
Podiatry is that branch of medicine concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of foot deformities and diseases. A doctor working in this field is called a podiatrist.
Such conditions as calluses, corns, bunions and other skin, muscle, bone and joint problems of the foot are handled by the podiatrist. Sometimes he will prescribe drugs while other times the treatment may call for minor surgery or various physical therapy devices.
A podiatrist is a specialist in preventative foot hygiene. He will often recommend correct shoes and corrective devices.
Podiatry is offered in a number of accredited schools where a four year course of study can lead to a degree of Doctor of Podiatric Medicine.
