Mark Roth, age 11, of Rock Island, I11., for his question:
WHERE DOES THE SLOTH LIVE?
You can often find the sloth in your local zoo, but to find one in the wilds you will have to go to Central or South America from Nicaragua to Brazil. The interesting, slow moving animal is related to the anteaters, armadillos and aardvarks.
A sloth's limbs have curved toes and long curved claws that are used as hooks. The animal uses its toes and claws to hang from tree branches in an upside down position.
Two toed sloths have two toes on their front feet and three on the back. The three toed sloth has three toes on each foot.
A sloth is able to turn its head three fourths of the way around. It can inch slowly along the branches in search of leaves and twigs, which it eats. The animal is more active at night than it is during the day.
A sloth grows to be about 20 inches long. It has a round head, tiny ears, no front teeth or tail that can be seen.
