Connie Mesler age 11, of Orlando, Fla., for her question:
HOW HIGH CAN A SPRINGBUK JUMP?
A springbok is a small antelope found in many zoos. In the wilds, you would have to travel all the way to the southern. African plains to find the animal that is famous for its jumping ability.
A springbok can leap from seven to 13 feet high, with its back arched, legs straight and its hooves bunched together. The good looking animal is reddish tan with a dark stripe on the flank marking off the white underparts. A fola of skin from the center of the back to the rump opens like a pouch to reveal a crest of long, white, bristly hair.
The animal has horns that are about 14 to 17 inches long, ringed, lyrate and hooked at the tips. The slender, graceful springbok stands about two and a half feet tall and weighs from 70 to 60 pounds.
In the past, hunters, killed so many of the animals that large wild nerds today can be found only in remote regions.
