Welcome to You Ask Andy

Marla Spedding, age 15, of Miami, Fla., for her question:

WHERE DOES CASHMERE WOOL COME FROM?

Fine, silky Cashmere wool, used to make beautiful sweaters and coats, comes from a long haired goat called the Cashmere goat. These goats live in Tibet and India, although some are also raised in France and Germany.

The Cashmere goat is a medium sized animal. It has drooping ears and spirally twisted horns.

The goats from the high plateaus and mountains are colored deep yellow. Goats that do not live in such high places are lighter colored, and those that live in the valleys and planes below the mountains

are pure white.

Cashmere goats that live in cold places have the heaviest fleece. Meat from the Cashmere goat can be eaten. Also, the milk is rich and is used for food in parts of India and Tibet.
