Christina Lacy, age 13, of Butte, Mont., for her question:
WHEN DID WE HAVE THE FIRST FLAG DAY?
June 14 is celebrated as Flag Day in memory of the day in 1777 when the Continental Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States. Flag Day was first officially observed in 1877 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the flag's selection.
Bernard Cigrand, a schoolteacher from Waubeka, Wisc., was among the people who suggested that Flag Day be observed each year. In 1885 he started a lifetime fight to establish Flag Day as an annual celebration. In 1887, Flag Day was proclaimed as an annual event in New York. Then in 116, President Woodrow Wilson established Flag Day as an annual national celebration.
Today Flag Day is not an official national holiday, but many people observe the event by displaying the flag in their homes, businesses and on public buildings. Pennsylvania celebrates Flag Day as a legal holiday.
